Dealer vs. mobile locksmith

Jeep key — dealer vs. us.

We do the same programming as the Jeep dealer, with the same dealer-grade equipment, on-site instead of at the service drive.

Key technology

Jeep key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Jeep — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Jeep's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Jeep is the off-road / lifestyle anchor of the Stellantis lineup — same five chip generations as RAM / Dodge / Chrysler but with a customer base that beats up keys harder than the commuter average. The Sentry Key SKIM era (1998–2006) covers the iconic Wrangler TJ (1997–2006), Cherokee XJ final years (1997–2001), Grand Cherokee ZJ / WJ, Liberty KJ, and Commander XK. The FOBIK flip-key era (2007–2013) covers Wrangler JK early (2007–2013), Grand Cherokee WK / WK2, Liberty KK, Commander, Patriot, Compass MK, and the rebranded Cherokee KL. The Smart Key push-to-start era (2014–2018) added BCM / RFHub programming on Grand Cherokee Summit / SRT, Cherokee Limited / Trailhawk, Wrangler JL launch (2018+), Renegade Limited. The current Stellantis proximity fob (2019–Present) covers Wrangler JL / 4xe, Gladiator JT, Grand Cherokee WL / L / 4xe (the all-new 2022+ generation), Cherokee KL final years, Compass MP final years, Renegade, Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer WS (reintroduced 2022), and the new Wagoneer S EV / Recon EV (2024+). Common Jeep gotcha: 1998–2006 Wrangler TJ / Cherokee XJ owners frequently swap their own batteries and end up with a SKIM-sync issue that mimics 'bad key' — we carry the SKIM bypass to fix this without replacing keys you don't need.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Jeep hybrid or EV.

Jeep's electrification is well underway — Wrangler 4xe (PHEV, 2021+) and Grand Cherokee 4xe (PHEV, 2022+) lead the lineup, with Wagoneer S EV (2024+) and Recon EV (2025+) launching on the Stellantis STLA Large platform. All four use the standard Stellantis proximity fob platform — programming is identical to gas variants. Two things catch 4xe and EV owners off-guard: (1) a marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage propulsion pack) causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look exactly like a key problem — we test the 12V FIRST on every 4xe / EV Jeep call before quoting key work; (2) Wrangler 4xe has a unique L4 / Hybrid / E-Save / Max Regen mode behavior that's separate from key authentication — we don't troubleshoot powertrain modes, but we'll flag if the issue isn't really about the key. Charge-port behavior (Level 1 / 2 / NACS) doesn't affect key programming on any of these.

Common problems

Common Jeep key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Jeep keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Jeep Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 replacement we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (Wrangler 4xe / Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEVs are sensitive); fob desync after a 12V battery service; or a failing RFHub module. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last.

I lost both Jeep keys at the trailhead — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Jeep 1998 to current is routine for us — including at trailheads (we get a few of these per year). We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, talk to the BCM / SKIM, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program. 30–60 min typical. SKIM bypass available for older Jeep if 2 working keys aren't available. Bring proof of ownership and your VIN.

Wrangler / Gladiator push-to-start intermittent — is it the key or the Jeep?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob (Jeep fobs see more abuse than most), marginal 12V battery (especially on 4xe PHEV variants), or fob desync after a battery service. We test all three before quoting key work. Jeep fobs especially live a hard life — pocket abuse from outdoor activities — so battery / contact issues are common.

My older Cherokee XJ / Wrangler TJ Sentry Key won't program — bad key or BCM?

Sometimes the SKIM module on these older Jeeps loses its sync after a battery disconnect or jump-start, and even a good key won't program. We carry the SKIM bypass module that lets us re-pair keys without 2 working originals. If the SKIM itself is faulty, we tell you — replacing it before re-keying makes sense.

FAQ

Common Jeep questions.

What chip does my Jeep use — Sentry Key, FOBIK flip, or Smart Key?

Roughly: pre-1998 (including CJ / TJ early) = no chip; 1998–2006 = Sentry Key (SKIM); 2007–2013 = combined transponder + remote (FOBIK / flip key); 2014–2018 = Smart Key push-to-start option on premium trims; 2019+ = current Stellantis proximity fob. Tell us year, model, and trim — VIN confirms before dispatch.

Can you make a Jeep Wrangler key at the trailhead?

Yes — Wrangler all-keys-lost calls happen at trailheads, beach parking, and remote driveways across our service area. We come to wherever the Jeep is parked (within our service footprint), confirm ownership, pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, and program a new key on-site. 30–60 min typical. No tow needed if reachable by paved road.

Do you handle the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer luxury platform?

Yes — both use the current Stellantis proximity fob. Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer (reintroduced 2022 on the WS chassis) shares key DNA with RAM 1500 DT. Series I / II / III / Series III L / Obsidian / Carbide all use the same key — trim-level differences are interior, not immobilizer.

What about Gladiator pickup trucks and the JT platform?

Gladiator (JT) shares the Wrangler JL key platform almost exactly. Same blanks, same programming approach. Smart Key on current trims (Sport S+, Mojave, Rubicon), transponder + flip on older. Mojave / Rubicon performance trims same key as base.
