Key technology

Ford key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Ford — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Ford's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Ford's PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) family is the longest-running domestic immobilizer story — 5 generations across nearly 30 years of production. The pre-1996 cut-only era was mechanical-only with no immobilizer. PATS 1 (1996–2001, Texas 4C fixed code) is the simplest — but with a quirk: requires 2 already-programmed keys to add a 3rd via the dash-light dance, otherwise a scan tool. PATS 2 (2000–2003, 40-bit 4D) added rolling code. PATS 80-bit (2004–2014, 4D63) was a major encryption upgrade. PATS 128-bit Super Chip (2013–current) is the highest-security Ford transponder, requiring 2 working keys OR dealer-level equipment for new key add. Ford Intelligent Access push-to-start (2013+) layers proximity on top of the underlying PATS chip. Every era requires a VIN-derived PIN we extract from Ford's vendor database in-truck. Common Ford gotcha: 2013–2018 models can be either 80-bit or 128-bit depending on trim and assembly plant — VIN confirms which before we dispatch the right blank. Older Expedition / Lincoln Navigator (2003–2014) have well-documented PATS antenna-ring failures that present as 'no-start, no theft light' — we diagnose the ring first before quoting key work. Lincoln runs identical PATS hardware with luxury fob casings, so a Lincoln key is a Ford key with a different shell.

Don't see your exact model or year? Call us with your VIN — we cover every Ford model on the road, and a 30-second VIN check confirms the chip type and price before dispatch.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Ford hybrid or EV.

Ford's hybrid + EV lineup (Escape Hybrid / PHEV, Maverick Hybrid, Explorer Hybrid, Fusion Hybrid / Energi, F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid, F-150 Lightning EV, Mustang Mach-E EV, E-Transit) all use the standard Ford Intelligent Access platform — programming is identical to gas variants. Two things catch hybrid/EV owners off-guard: (1) a marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage hybrid pack) causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look exactly like a key problem — we test the 12V FIRST on every hybrid Ford call before quoting key work; (2) Phone-as-Key (the digital key feature on 2021+ F-150, Mach-E, Bronco) is owner-driven via the Ford app — we handle the physical fob, not the digital key setup. F-150 Lightning and Mach-E charge-port behavior doesn't affect key programming.

Common problems

Common Ford key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Ford keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Ford Intelligent Access key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 replacement we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (Ford fobs go intermittent below 11.5V); fob desync after a 12V battery service; or a failing PATS antenna ring around the ignition (well-documented Expedition issue). We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last.

I lost both Ford keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Ford 1996 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, talk to the PATS module, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program to the PCM. PATS 128-bit (2013+) requires a working key OR dealer-level equipment we carry. 30–60 min typical. Bring proof of ownership and your VIN.

F-150 / Explorer push-to-start failing intermittently — is it the key or the truck?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V battery (cold weather Ford complaints peak in winter), or fob desync after a battery service. We test all three before quoting key work. If it's actually the key, we replace it; if it's the truck, we tell you and don't charge for a key you don't need.

My Expedition won't start and the key is fine — could it be the PATS antenna ring?

Yes — older Expedition (and Lincoln Navigator) have well-documented PATS antenna ring failures around the ignition cylinder that present as 'won't start, no theft light.' Replacing the key is throwing money at the wrong fix. We diagnose the antenna ring first, swap it if needed, then reprogram your existing key.

FAQ

Common Ford questions.

What chip does my Ford use — PATS 1, PATS 2, 80-bit, or 128-bit?

Roughly: pre-1996 = no chip; 1996–2001 = PATS 1 (Texas 4C fixed code); 2000–2003 = PATS 2 (40-bit 4D); 2004–2014 = PATS 80-bit 4D63 (significant encryption upgrade); 2013–current = PATS 128-bit Super Chip. Push-to-start models (2013+) layer Ford Intelligent Access proximity on top. Tell us year and model — we confirm the exact chip from your VIN before dispatch.

Can you make a Ford F-150 key on-site?

Yes — F-150 is our highest-volume call type. Standard transponder, smart proximity fob, and push-to-start on current model years all programmed in your driveway, parking lot, or fleet yard. 25–40 min typical for spares with a working key, 30–60 min for all-keys-lost. Bring year, model, VIN, and proof of ownership.

Do you handle Mustang keys including the GT, Mach 1, and Shelby trims?

Yes. Mustang base, GT, Mach 1, and Shelby trims all run on Ford's PATS / Intelligent Access platform — same programming approach as base Mustang of the same year. The performance bits are mechanical and engine, not the immobilizer. Older Fox-body / SN-95 Mustangs without immobilizers we cut by code or impression on-site.

Do you service Ford Transit, Transit Connect, and commercial fleet vans?

Yes — Transit, Transit Connect, and E-Series cargo vans are core fleet/commercial work for us. We also do volume programs for Ford-based fleet operations and last-mile delivery companies. Net 30 terms and COI available for active commercial accounts.
