Key technology

Dodge key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Dodge — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Dodge's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Dodge runs the same Stellantis chip family as RAM / Chrysler / Jeep — five generations across nearly 30 years. The Sentry Key SKIM era (1998–2006) covers the muscle-car revival Charger / Magnum / Challenger and the older Caravan / Stratus / Neon. The FOBIK flip-key era (2007–2013) introduced the iconic combined transponder+remote housing on Caliber, Avenger, Journey, Grand Caravan, and the LX-platform Charger / Challenger. The Smart Key push-to-start era (2014–2018) added BCM / RFHub programming on R/T / SRT / Hellcat trims. The current Stellantis proximity fob (2019–Present) covers current Charger (now EV-only after 2023 ICE discontinuation), Challenger (final-year 2023, then EV reboot 2024+), Durango, and Hornet. Dodge's lineup has shrunk significantly under Stellantis — many former Dodge models (Avenger, Caliber, Magnum, Stratus, Neon, Viper, Dart) are discontinued but still common in our service area for older-fleet and enthusiast customers. Common Dodge gotcha: 2007–2013 FOBIK keys often fail with cracked plastic housings before the chip dies — we swap the board into a new shell for $50–$120 instead of selling a full replacement.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Dodge hybrid or EV.

Dodge's electrification has just started — Charger Daytona (2024+, full battery EV replacing the discontinued ICE Charger / Challenger) and Hornet R/T PHEV (2023+) both use the standard Stellantis proximity fob platform. Programming is identical to gas variants. The thing that catches EV / PHEV owners off-guard is that a marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage propulsion pack) causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look like a key problem. We test the 12V FIRST on every Dodge EV / PHEV call. Charge-port behavior on the Charger Daytona doesn't affect key programming. The Hornet R/T uses the same key as the gas Hornet GT — only the powertrain differs.

Common problems

Common Dodge key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Dodge keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Dodge Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 replacement we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (Charger / Challenger 5.7L Hemi has aggressive starter draw); fob desync after a 12V battery service; or a failing RFHub module. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last.

I lost both Dodge keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Dodge 1998 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, talk to the BCM / SKIM, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program. 30–60 min typical. SKIM bypass available for older Dodge if 2 working keys aren't available.

Charger / Challenger push-to-start intermittent — is it the key or the car?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V battery (5.7L / 6.4L / 6.2L Hemi cars exposed to weak 12V), or fob desync after a battery service. We test all three before quoting key work. The Hellcat / Demon high-output starter is especially sensitive to 12V health.

My older Dodge Caravan / Caliber FOBIK won't program — bad key or BCM?

Sometimes the FOBIK plastic housing cracks and breaks the internal contacts even though the chip and remote still work intermittently. We test the FOBIK first — if it's a contact issue, board-into-new-shell swap is $50–$120 vs. a full programmed replacement. If the BCM is faulty, we tell you.

FAQ

Common Dodge questions.

What chip does my Dodge use — Sentry Key, FOBIK flip, or Smart Key?

Roughly: pre-1998 = no chip; 1998–2006 = Sentry Key (SKIM); 2007–2013 = combined transponder + remote (FOBIK / flip key); 2014–2018 = Smart Key push-to-start option on premium trims; 2019+ = current Stellantis proximity fob. Tell us year, model, and trim — VIN confirms the exact chip before dispatch.

Can you make a Hellcat / SRT / Demon key without involving the dealer?

Yes. Hellcat, SRT, and Demon trims run on the same Stellantis immobilizer as base Charger / Challenger — the engine is different, the key isn't. We program new keys on-site for every Charger / Challenger / Durango trim. 25–40 min for spares.

Do you do Dodge Hornet smart-key programming?

Yes — Hornet (introduced 2023) uses the current Stellantis proximity fob with push-to-start. Standard programming approach, on-site in 30–45 minutes. R/T PHEV variant uses the same key with hybrid 12V management.

What about the older Dodge Grand Caravan / Caliber / Magnum?

Grand Caravan (2008–2020) uses Stellantis Sentry Key / FOBIK depending on year. Caliber (2007–2012) and Magnum (2005–2008) are FOBIK / SKIM era. We have the right blanks and programming covered for all of them.
