Chevrolet key — dealer vs. us.

Key technology

Chevrolet key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Chevrolet — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Chevrolet's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Chevrolet's chip family is the longest-running domestic immobilizer alongside Ford PATS — 6 generations across more than 30 years. The VATS / Pass-Key era (1990–1996) is unique in the industry: not an electronic transponder but a mechanical resistor pellet embedded in the key blade that the BCM reads through resistance values. There are 15 distinct VATS resistor codes — wrong code, no start. We carry the full resistor-blank library. Pass-Key III (1997–2002) introduced the Philips ID46 transponder. ID46 Circle+ (2003–2009) added the B111 high-security blade. ID46 GM EXT (2010–2018) used the B119 blade. HU100 High-Security (2019–2024) is the current Chevrolet transponder family. Chevrolet Smart Key push-to-start (2021+) layers proximity on top. Every era requires a VIN-derived PIN we extract from GM's vendor database in-truck. GMC, Buick, and Cadillac all share the same underlying GM platform — same chip families, same toolset, different fob casings and trim. A GMC Sierra key IS a Chevrolet Silverado key with different badging. Common Chevy gotcha: 2003–2009 trucks (Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban) often present with a worn ignition cylinder that fakes a 'won't start' on a perfectly good key — we test the cylinder first before quoting key work.

VATS / Pass-Key (Resistor Pellet)

First-Gen GM Anti-Theft
~1990–1996
Locksmith support ✅ Yes
All keys lost ✅ Yes
  • GM Vehicle Anti-Theft System / Pass-Key — mechanical resistor pellet embedded in the key blade
  • BCM reads resistance value (one of 15 distinct codes); wrong resistance, no start
  • Camaro, Corvette, Silverado / C/K, Suburban, Blazer, S-10, Cavalier, Caprice of this era
  • We carry the full resistor-blank library (all 15 codes) and the BCM-relearn equipment
Common chassis: Camaro 4th gen (1993–1996)Corvette C4 (1990–1996)Silverado / C/K (1988–1996)Suburban (1992–1996)Blazer / S-10 (1991–1996)Cavalier (1990–1996)Caprice (1991–1996)
Customer takeaway: VATS era — fully serviceable on-site. Resistor pellet keys cut and resistance-coded to your existing BCM value. The simplest era of Chevy key work, and the resistor library is mature.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Chevrolet hybrid or EV.

Chevrolet's hybrid + EV lineup (Volt PHEV 2011–2019, Bolt EV 2017–2023 and returning, Bolt EUV 2022–2023, Blazer EV 2024+, Equinox EV 2024+, Silverado EV 2024+) all use the standard Chevrolet Smart Key push-to-start platform — programming is identical to gas variants. The Bolt EV in particular has a well-known 12V auxiliary battery sensitivity — a marginal 12V causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look exactly like a key problem. We test the 12V FIRST on every Bolt call before quoting key work — usually a $40 fix at most parts stores. Silverado EV and the new GM Ultium-platform EVs (Blazer EV, Equinox EV) add charge-port behavior but neither affects key programming. The discontinued Volt PHEV (2011–2019) used the standard ID46 GM EXT platform with hybrid-specific 12V management — same diagnostic-first approach.

Common problems

Common Chevrolet key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Chevrolet keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Chevy Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 replacement we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (especially on Bolt EV / Volt where 12V dropouts are common); fob desync after a 12V battery service; or a failing BCM antenna. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last.

I lost both Chevy keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Chevrolet 1996 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, talk to the BCM, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program. 30–60 min typical. Bring proof of ownership and your VIN.

My Pass-Key Cavalier / S-10 cranks but won't start — bad key or bad BCM?

Usually the resistor pellet in the key has worn out (these resistors degrade after 10–20 years of use), OR the BCM lost its learned value after a battery disconnect. We test the resistor reading first, replace the key if it's degraded, and re-teach the BCM if needed. Replacing a $50 key beats a $400 BCM.

Silverado / Tahoe push-to-start intermittent — is it the key or the truck?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V battery (cold weather GM trucks especially), or fob desync after a battery service. We test all three before quoting key work. If it's actually the key, we replace it; if it's the truck, we tell you.

Chevrolet process

From your call to a working Chevrolet key.

Five steps. Flat-quote on the phone, no upsells when we arrive.

1
Call & quote
Tell us year, model, and VIN. We confirm the immobilizer generation and quote a flat all-in price on the phone.
2
Dispatch
Tech rolls with the right Chevrolet-generation blank and equipment, plus your VIN-specific key file pre-loaded.
3
ID & cut
Verify proof of ownership, cut the blade to your VIN code. Quick.
4
Program
Pair the new key to your Chevrolet's immobilizer; test start, locks, panic, trunk.
5
Drive away
Drive away with a working Chevrolet key, written invoice, warranty.

FAQ

Common Chevrolet questions.

What chip does my Chevy use — VATS, Pass-Key III, ID46, or Smart Key?

Roughly: 1990–1996 = VATS / Pass-Key resistor pellet (no electronic chip, but BCM has to learn the resistor value); 1997–2002 = Pass-Key III with Philips ID46; 2003–2009 = ID46 Circle+ with B111 blade; 2010–2018 = ID46 GM EXT with B119 blade; 2019–2024 = HU100 high-security; 2021+ = Chevrolet Smart Key push-to-start. Tell us year and model — we confirm the exact chip from your VIN before dispatch.

Can you replace a Silverado smart key in my driveway?

Yes — Silverado is our highest-volume Chevrolet call. Smart key programmed on-site for every model year. 25–40 min for spares with a working key, 30–60 min for all-keys-lost. Bring year, model, VIN, and proof of ownership.

What about the older Pass-Key resistor keys (Cavalier, Malibu, S-10)?

We carry the right resistor-coded blanks for older Pass-Key-equipped Chevys. These older systems are often misdiagnosed by generalist locksmiths — the BCM has to learn the new resistor value, not just the cut. We do this routinely. 15–25 min on-site for most.

Do you handle Corvette and Camaro proximity / push-to-start?

Yes. Corvette C7/C8 and Camaro proximity keys are well within our equipment coverage. The C8 mid-engine layout puts the OBD2 port in a non-standard location — we confirm with VIN before dispatch so we bring the right cable extension.
