Key technology

Chrysler key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Chrysler — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Chrysler's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Chrysler is the namesake brand of the Stellantis (formerly Chrysler / FCA / DaimlerChrysler) lineage — same five chip generations as RAM / Dodge / Jeep but with a heavily-shrunken current lineup. The Sentry Key SKIM era (1998–2006) covers the entire 1990s-2000s Chrysler renaissance: 300M, Concorde, LHS, Sebring, Town & Country, Pacifica (1st gen 2004–2008), and PT Cruiser. The FOBIK flip-key era (2007–2013) introduced the combined transponder+remote housing on 200, Sebring final, Town & Country, 300 LX. The Smart Key push-to-start era (2014–2018) added BCM / RFHub programming on 300C / 200C / Pacifica premium trims. The current Stellantis proximity fob (2019–Present) covers Pacifica, Pacifica Hybrid, Voyager, and the final-year 300 (2023). Chrysler's lineup will continue to shrink under Stellantis — the 300 ended production in 2023, leaving only Pacifica / Voyager (with a future Halcyon EV concept teased for the brand revival). Common Chrysler gotcha: Pacifica Hybrid (2017+) has a notoriously short-lived 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage hybrid pack) that mimics 'intermittent fob' symptoms — we test 12V first on every Pacifica Hybrid call.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Chrysler hybrid or EV.

Chrysler's hybrid lineup is anchored by the Pacifica Hybrid (PHEV, 2017–Present) — the only PHEV minivan in North America. It uses the standard Stellantis Smart Key proximity fob platform; programming is identical to the gas Pacifica. The thing that catches Pacifica Hybrid owners off-guard is a notoriously short-lived 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage propulsion pack) — Chrysler has issued multiple service bulletins on this and it's a well-known real issue. Symptoms: 'intermittent fob,' 'won't push-to-start sometimes,' 'random electrical glitches.' We test the 12V FIRST on every Pacifica Hybrid call before quoting key work. A 12V replacement is a $40–$80 fix that resolves most complaints. Charge-port behavior on Pacifica Hybrid doesn't affect key programming. Future Chrysler Halcyon EV concept (rumored production 2026+) will use the next-gen Stellantis EV platform — we'll add coverage details when it launches.

Common problems

Common Chrysler key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Chrysler keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Chrysler Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 replacement we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (Pacifica Hybrid in particular is sensitive to 12V); fob desync after a 12V battery service; or a failing RFHub module. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last.

I lost both Chrysler keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Chrysler 1998 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, talk to the BCM / SKIM, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program. 30–60 min typical. SKIM bypass available for older Chrysler if 2 working keys aren't available.

Pacifica push-to-start intermittent — is it the key or the van?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V battery (Pacifica Hybrid 12V is famously short-lived and a known service item), or fob desync after a battery service. We test all three before quoting key work. Pacifica Hybrid 12V replacement is a $40–$80 fix that resolves most 'intermittent fob' complaints.

My older PT Cruiser / Sebring FOBIK won't program — bad key or BCM?

Sometimes the FOBIK plastic housing cracks and breaks the internal contacts even though the chip and remote still work intermittently. We test the FOBIK first — if it's a contact issue, board-into-new-shell swap is $50–$120 vs. a full programmed replacement. If the BCM is faulty, we tell you.

FAQ

Common Chrysler questions.

What chip does my Chrysler use — Sentry Key, FOBIK flip, or Smart Key?

Roughly: pre-1998 = no chip; 1998–2006 = Sentry Key (SKIM); 2007–2013 = combined transponder + remote (FOBIK / flip key); 2014–2018 = Smart Key push-to-start option on premium trims; 2019+ = current Stellantis proximity fob. Tell us year, model, and trim — VIN confirms the exact chip before dispatch.

Can you replace a Chrysler Pacifica key fob in our driveway?

Yes — Pacifica is one of our most common Chrysler calls. Family vehicles see frequent lost-key scenarios (kids, daycare, soccer practice). We come to you, pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, program the new fob in 25–40 min for spares or 30–60 min for all-keys-lost. Pacifica Hybrid same — 12V check first.

Do you still do Chrysler 300 keys including SRT8?

Yes. 300 base, S, Limited, Touring, SRT8, and the final-year (2023) 300C use the same Stellantis immobilizer platform across the LX / LD chassis years. Performance trims don't change the immobilizer — same programming approach across all trims.

What about my older PT Cruiser, Sebring, or Town & Country?

Older Chrysler Sentry Key and FOBIK transponders are still well-supported. PT Cruiser (2001–2010), Sebring (1995–2010), Town & Country (1990–2016) all within our equipment coverage. Typically $140–$260 for these older mechanical-with-chip keys depending on year.
