Key technology

Cadillac key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Cadillac — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Cadillac's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Cadillac is the badge-engineered luxury twin of Chevrolet — same six chip generations, same GM toolset we describe on the Chevrolet page, but the fob casings and trim differ (real wood inlays on Premium Luxury / Sport, leather wraps on Platinum). The shared platform means a Cadillac Escalade key IS a Chevy Tahoe key with different badging. The shared platform also means the same VATS resistor library covers older DeVille and Eldorado from the 1990s. Where Cadillac differs is the lineup focus: heavier emphasis on flagship luxury (Escalade, Celestiq, ELR collectible), the V-Series performance halo (CT5-V Blackwing, ATS-V, CTS-V), and the all-electric reboot (Lyriq, Optiq, Vistiq, Escalade IQ, Celestiq). Celestiq (2024+) is a hand-built ultra-luxury EV at $300K+ — we'll cover it case-by-case if any reach our service area. Common Cadillac gotcha: the iconic Cadillac CTS-V (2009–2019) and ATS-V (2016–2019) use the same key as the base trim — performance-tier owners often expect special key handling that doesn't actually exist. The Escalade EXT pickup (2002–2013, discontinued) uses the same key as the contemporary Avalanche.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Cadillac hybrid or EV.

Cadillac is leading GM's luxury-EV transition — Lyriq (2023+, mid-size SUV), Optiq (2025+, compact SUV), Vistiq (2026+, 3-row), Escalade IQ (2025+, full-size flagship), Celestiq (2024+, hand-built ultra-luxury). All use the standard Cadillac Smart Key push-to-start with EV-specific 12V auxiliary battery management on the GM Ultium platform. The 12V battery on these EVs is separate from the high-voltage propulsion pack and is the most common cause of 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look like a key problem. We test the 12V FIRST on every Cadillac EV call before quoting key work. Charge-port behavior (CCS / NACS) doesn't affect key programming. The discontinued ELR PHEV (2014–2016, Volt-based) uses the standard ID46 GM EXT platform with hybrid-specific 12V management. Celestiq is hand-built and ultra-rare — we'll handle case-by-case if one reaches our service area.

Common problems

Common Cadillac key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Cadillac keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Cadillac Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 replacement we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (Cadillac EVs especially sensitive); fob desync after a 12V battery service; or a failing BCM antenna. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last.

I lost both Cadillac keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Cadillac 1996 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, talk to the BCM, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program. 30–60 min typical. Bring proof of ownership and your VIN.

Escalade push-to-start intermittent — is it the key or the truck?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V battery (long parking-lot dwell drains 12V on Escalade), or fob desync after a battery service. We test all three before quoting key work. Same diagnostic approach as Tahoe — they're the same platform.

My older DeVille / Eldorado with VATS cranks but won't start — bad key or BCM?

Usually the resistor pellet has worn out (these resistors degrade after 10–20 years) or the BCM lost its learned value after a battery disconnect. We test the resistor reading first, replace the key if degraded, re-teach the BCM if needed. Same fix as Chevrolet of the same era — $50 key beats a $400 BCM.

FAQ

Common Cadillac questions.

What chip does my Cadillac use — VATS, Pass-Key III, ID46, or Smart Key?

Same as Chevrolet (GM platform shared): 1990–1996 = VATS / Pass-Key resistor pellet; 1997–2002 = Pass-Key III with Philips ID46; 2003–2009 = ID46 Circle+ with B111 blade; 2010–2018 = ID46 GM EXT with B119 blade; 2019–2024 = HU100 high-security; 2021+ = Smart Key push-to-start. Tell us year and trim — we confirm the exact chip from your VIN before dispatch.

Can you do an Escalade smart-key replacement at my hotel or valet stand?

Yes — Escalade keys are frequently lost at valet, hotels, busy retail, and airports. We come to wherever the vehicle is. 25–40 min for a smart key with a working spare; 30–60 min for all-keys-lost. Bring year, model, VIN, and proof of ownership.

Do you handle the Lyriq, Optiq, Vistiq, Escalade IQ, and Celestiq EVs?

Yes — all Cadillac EVs (Lyriq 2023+, Optiq 2025+, Vistiq 2026+, Escalade IQ 2025+, Celestiq 2024+ hand-built) use the GM Ultium-platform Smart Key. Programming is OBD-based with dealer-grade equipment. Note: 12V battery sensitivity is real on these — we test 12V FIRST. Call with VIN before dispatch on any current-MY Cadillac EV.

What about the older CTS, ATS, STS, DTS, DeVille, and Eldorado?

All well-supported. CTS (2003–2019), ATS (2013–2019), STS (2005–2011), DTS (2006–2011), DeVille (1949–2005), SRX (2004–2016), XTS (2013–2019), Eldorado (1953–2002), Seville (1956–2004), ELR (2014–2016) all within our standard equipment coverage. Same programming approach as the matching Chevrolet of the same year.
