Dealer vs. mobile locksmith

Lexus key — dealer vs. us.

We do the same programming as the Lexus dealer, with the same dealer-grade equipment, on-site instead of at the service drive.

Key technology

Lexus key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Lexus — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Lexus's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Lexus's chip-platform history is the same Texas family as Toyota — that's why aftermarket support is excellent across all four eras. The pre-1998 era was mechanical-only with no immobilizer. Texas 4C (1998–2002, fixed code) is the simplest — cloned on a handheld in minutes; older ES, GS, LS, SC, RX of this era. Texas 4D-67 (2003–2009, encrypted rolling code) is the workhorse era — most ES, GS, LS, IS, RX, GX, LX of this generation. Texas G chip (2010–2018) introduced higher encryption requiring VIN-derived PIN extraction; covers RX, NX, ES, IS, GS, LS of this generation plus the early Smart Key proximity rollout. Texas H chip (2013–current) is the highest-security Toyota / Lexus transponder; layered with the Lexus Smart Key proximity platform on every modern model (the LS adopted Smart Key in 2007, expanding to the rest of the lineup through the 2010s). Every era requires a VIN-derived PIN we extract from the Toyota / Lexus vendor database in-truck. Common Lexus gotcha: 2013–2018 models can be either G chip or H chip depending on trim and assembly plant — VIN confirms which before we dispatch the right blank. The Lexus Smart Key on 2015+ models carries a relay-attack vulnerability — we recommend a Faraday pouch on every replacement.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Lexus hybrid or EV.

Lexus's hybrid + EV lineup (RX Hybrid, ES Hybrid, NX Hybrid + PHEV, UX Hybrid, LC 500h, LS 500h, RZ EV) all use the standard Smart Key push-to-start platform — programming is identical to gas variants. The thing that catches hybrid Lexus owners off-guard is that a marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage hybrid pack) causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look exactly like a key problem. We test the 12V FIRST on every hybrid Lexus call before quoting key work. If it's the 12V, that's a $40 fix at most parts stores; if it's actually the key, we replace it. The RX 450h+ and NX 450h+ PHEVs add charge-port behavior but don't affect key programming. The RZ EV (2023+) is Lexus's first dedicated battery-electric and uses the standard Smart Key platform; bring VIN before dispatch so we confirm the exact fob variant.

Common problems

Common Lexus key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Lexus keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Lexus Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 fix we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (especially on RX Hybrid, ES Hybrid, NX Hybrid, LS Hybrid); fob desync after 12V service; or a failing antenna ring around the push-start button. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last. Lexus fobs eat batteries fast in cold weather; check that before assuming the key has failed.

I lost both Lexus keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Lexus 1998 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program to the ECU. 30–60 min typical depending on era. Bring proof of ownership and your VIN — we don't dispatch on all-keys-lost without it.

RX / ES Hybrid intermittent push-to-start — key or car?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage hybrid pack), or fob desync after a 12V service. We test all three before quoting key work. Hybrid 12V is the most-overlooked Lexus diagnosis — usually a $40 fix at most parts stores, not a $300 key.

My Lexus fob got water damage or the buttons stopped responding — fix or replace?

If the case cracked or the buttons stopped working, we often swap the internal board into a fresh shell ($60–$140 depending on model) rather than reprogramming a whole new key. If the chip itself is shorted internally, then it's a full replacement. We diagnose first — board swaps are quicker and cheaper when they work.

FAQ

Common Lexus questions.

Can you do a Lexus RX smart key on-site?

Yes — RX is the highest-volume Lexus call. Smart key with proximity entry, programmed in your driveway in 30–60 minutes. Same approach across RX 350, RX 350h Hybrid, RX 450h+ PHEV, and RX 500h F SPORT trims.

What about the LX 600 (the full-size flagship SUV)?

LX 600 (introduced 2022, replacing the LX 570) uses the current Toyota / Lexus Smart Key platform. Within our equipment coverage. The LX 570 (2008–2021) is also fully supported across all trims.

Do you handle LC 500 and LC 500h coupes?

Yes. LC 500 and LC 500h grand tourers use the standard Lexus / Toyota smart-key platform with the LC's premium fob shell. Same programming approach as RX / ES / NX of the same year.

Are Lexus keys interchangeable with Toyota keys?

The underlying chip programming is shared (same Texas family — 4C, 4D-67, G, H), but the physical fobs are different (Lexus branding, premium materials, distinct button layouts). We carry Lexus-specific fobs in inventory — you can't swap a Camry fob into an ES.

What about the RZ 450e (Lexus's first dedicated EV)?

RZ uses the standard Lexus Smart Key platform — same as ES, NX, RX of the same year. EV powertrain doesn't change key programming. Bring VIN before dispatch on 2023+ RZ so we confirm the exact fob variant.

Do you do older Lexus GS, SC, IS300 — the legacy sport / luxury cars?

Yes. GS (1993–2020 across 4 generations), SC400 / SC430 (1992–2010), IS300 1st gen (2001–2005) plus every later IS generation, HS 250h (2010–2012), CT 200h (2011–2017) — all within our equipment coverage. These are increasingly enthusiast / collector vehicles; we have the right blanks and chip-era programming.
