Most generic locksmiths can't program Genesis — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Genesis's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Genesis's chip-platform history mirrors Hyundai's — that's why aftermarket support is solid. Pre-2010 Hyundai/Kia transponders (the era before Genesis was its own brand) used ID-46 family chips on standard keys; legacy Hyundai Genesis sedans (2009–2016) and Genesis Coupe (2010–2016) fall here. Hyundai Smart Key proximity rolled out across the lineup in the early 2010s, earlier on the Genesis luxury line than on volume Hyundai models. When Genesis became a standalone brand in 2017, it kept the Hyundai platform but introduced distinct premium fobs across G70 / G80 / G90. Current Genesis Smart Key (2017+) is layered with Digital Key support (smartphone credential via the Genesis app and Connected Services), and the GV-line SUVs added relay-attack mitigation in newer model years. Every era requires a VIN-derived PIN we extract in-truck. Two Hyundai/Kia gotchas DO NOT apply to Genesis: the Kia Boys / Vehicle Theft Software Upgrade vulnerability (bladed twist-ignition models without factory immobilizers) — Genesis has always shipped with factory immobilizers because of the luxury positioning, so Genesis owners do not need the recall.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Genesis hybrid or EV.

Genesis's EV + electrified lineup (GV60 EV, Electrified G80, Electrified GV70) all use the standard Genesis Smart Key + Digital Key platform — programming is identical to gas variants. The thing that catches owners off-guard on the Electrified models is that a marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage EV pack) causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look exactly like a key problem. We test the 12V FIRST on every Electrified Genesis call before quoting key work — usually a $40 fix at most parts stores. The GV60 EV adds charge-port behavior but doesn't affect key programming. Note: GV60 Performance trim sometimes ships with a different fob layout than base — bring VIN before dispatch.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Genesis keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Genesis Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 fix we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery; fob desync after a 12V service; or a failing antenna ring around the push-start button. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last. Cold weather is brutal on Genesis fobs — battery first, always.

I lost both Genesis keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Genesis is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program to the ECU. 30–60 min typical. Bring proof of ownership and VIN — we don't dispatch on AKL without it. Same approach on legacy Hyundai Genesis (pre-2017) and current Genesis-branded models.

G80 / GV70 intermittent push-to-start — key or car?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V auxiliary battery, or fob desync after a 12V service. We test all three before quoting key work. The 12V is the most-overlooked diagnosis on Genesis — usually a $40 fix at most parts stores, not a $400 key.

Digital Key on my phone stopped working — can you fix that?

Digital Key issues (phone-as-key) aren't a locksmith problem — they're a Genesis-account problem managed through the Genesis app and your Genesis Connected Services subscription. Common Genesis questions.

Can you replace a Genesis G80 smart key?

Yes — G80 is the most common Genesis call we get. Smart Key with proximity entry and Digital Key support, programmed on-site in 30–60 minutes. Same approach across G80 base, AWD, 3.5T Sport, and the new electrified G80.

What about Genesis Digital Key (the phone-as-key feature)?

Digital Key is a smartphone-based credential managed through the Genesis app, not a physical key. We can replace your physical Smart Key fob; Digital Key issues (lost phone, account problems, transferring to a new device) are handled through your Genesis account directly. The physical fob still works regardless of Digital Key status.

Do you handle the GV60 electric Genesis?

Yes — GV60 (2022+) uses the standard Genesis Smart Key platform plus Digital Key. EV powertrain doesn't affect key programming. Within our equipment coverage. Bring VIN before dispatch on Performance trim so we confirm the exact fob variant.

Are Genesis fobs the same as Hyundai fobs?

The underlying chip programming is shared (Hyundai platform), but the physical fobs are completely different (Genesis branding, premium leather + metal materials, distinct button layouts). We carry Genesis-specific fobs in inventory — no swapping a Sonata fob into a G80.

What about the older Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Genesis sedan (pre-2017)?

Those pre-date Genesis becoming a standalone brand. Hyundai Genesis sedan (2009–2016, BH / DH chassis) and Genesis Coupe (2010–2016, BK chassis) are Hyundai-platform with Hyundai-branded fobs. Both within our equipment coverage. The Coupe in particular has a strong enthusiast following — we see steady calls.

Do you do the new electrified G80 and Electrified GV70?

Yes — both use the standard Genesis Smart Key platform with EV-specific drivetrains. Programming is identical to gas variants of the same year. Bring VIN before dispatch so we confirm the exact fob (Electrified models sometimes ship with different button layouts).
