Key technology

Porsche key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Porsche — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Porsche's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Porsche key work runs four eras across the entire lineup — the locksmith industry classifies them by encryption architecture, not by sports-car-vs-SUV. Older Porsche (1996–2010) covers 911 996/997, Boxster 986/987, Cayman 987, and the Carrera GT — Porsche-specific transponders that need Porsche-only tooling. KESSY (2003–2010) is the first-gen Cayenne 9PA — same VW Group platform as period Audi A8 D3 and VW Touareg I. F-BCM (Front BCM, 2011–2024) is the workhorse era and covers the entire mid-life lineup: 911 991, Boxster/Cayman 981, Cayenne 92A, Panamera 970, and Macan 95B — same toolset we use for Audi BCM2 and VW BCM2. MLB (2018–Present) is the current generation across the lineup: Panamera 971, Cayenne 9YA, 911 992, 718 Boxster/Cayman 982 late-cycle, and the new Macan Electric — locksmith add-key supported on-site, all-keys-lost dealer-only at present. Parts pricing notes: 911 / 718 fobs are dealer-only OEM with no aftermarket equivalent, and the latest 992 fob retails north of $700 just for the shell. F-BCM-platform Cayenne / Panamera / Macan fobs have aftermarket equivalents at significantly less. Common Porsche gotcha: F-BCM 991 cars need a 'matched' immobilizer file on all-keys-lost — the procedure takes 30–60 minutes vs. 20–30 min for a spare. Blade cuts: HU66 (VW Group platforms) and Porsche-specific patterns on older 911 / 718.

Common problems

Common Porsche key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Porsche keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why won't my Porsche key start the car?

Most often a dead fob battery, a fob desynced after a 12V battery service, or — on older 911s — a failing ignition module. We diagnose first. A new key won't fix an ignition or immobilizer module fault, and we'll tell you before you pay.

Can I really get a Porsche key without going to the dealer?

Yes. We program 911 (996, 997, 991, 992), Cayenne, Macan, Panamera, and Taycan on-site with dealer-grade Porsche-platform equipment. No tow, no dealer appointment. Cost is significantly below dealer + tow.

Lost both Porsche keys — is all-keys-lost possible?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Porsche requires more steps than a spare but it's done on-site. 30–60 minutes typical depending on platform. We pull the immobilizer data, generate the new key file, cut, and program. Bring proof of ownership and VIN.

My Cayenne or Panamera fob is intermittent — what now?

Usually fob wear or weak battery. We test the fob first. If the fob's bad, we cut and program a fresh one. If the issue is car-side antenna or BCM, a new key won't fix it — we tell you before charging.

FAQ

Common Porsche questions.

What's MLB and does it apply to my Porsche?

MLB is the VW Group's premium-platform immobilizer used on current Cayenne, Panamera, Macan, and Audi premium models. The 911 uses different (Porsche-specific) systems by generation. We confirm by VIN before dispatch.

Can you replace a 911 key on-site?

Yes — 911 keys (996, 997, 991, 992 generations) are within our equipment coverage. Each generation has slightly different programming behavior. Standard 20–30 minute job for spare keys; 30–60 min for all-keys-lost.

Do you handle Taycan electric Porsche?

Yes — Taycan uses the MLB platform with EV-specific features. Within our current equipment coverage.

What about Cayman and Boxster (the 718 models)?

Current 718 Cayman and Boxster use Porsche-specific immobilizer systems shared with the 911 platform. Older Cayman / Boxster (987, 981 generations) use earlier Porsche systems. All generations covered.
