Mercedes-Benz key — dealer vs. us.

We do the same programming as the Mercedes-Benz dealer, with the same dealer-grade equipment, on-site instead of at the service drive.

Key technology

Mercedes-Benz key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Mercedes-Benz — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Mercedes-Benz's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Mercedes-Benz uses a security system called FBS (Fahrzeugbesitzer-System / Drive Authorization System). Over the years it has evolved through three generations in active use today, and each one changes what's possible when replacing or programming keys. Modern Mercedes fobs come in two physical formats — the chrome-bordered SmartKey card (current S-Class and EQS) and the traditional plastic fob with chrome wing. KEYLESS GO is the same fob with the proximity feature enabled. Common Mercedes gotcha: replacement keys must be coded to the specific EIS unit, so cores transferred between cars don't work — every key file is VIN- and EIS-specific. We carry dealer-grade equipment for FBS2 and FBS3 plus blanks for HU64, HU72, and HU39 cuts. Smart car specialty: Mercedes-Benz pulled Smart out of the US market in 2019, leaving Smart Fortwo / Forfour / EQ Fortwo / Roadster owners stranded — most US Mercedes dealers no longer service Smart cars, and most aftermarket locksmiths don't carry the platform-specific equipment Smart requires. We do. Smart cars use a Mercedes-derived immobilizer system close to FBS3 architecture; we cover Smart Fortwo (453 generation, plus older 451 and 450), the gas + EQ electric variants, and the discontinued Roadster. If you've been told 'we can't help' by a dealer or another locksmith, call us with VIN — Smart car key work is one of the niches where we have meaningful coverage that's getting harder to find.

FBS2

Early Transponder Era
~1995–2003
Locksmith support ✅ Yes
All keys lost ✅ Yes
  • First modern immobilizer system used by Mercedes
  • Basic transponder chip + simple authorization modules
  • Found in older models like early W210, W202, ML (pre-2003)
Common chassis: W210W202ML (pre-2003)
Customer takeaway: Simple compared to newer systems. Still serviceable, but mostly phased out at this point.

FBS3

Infrared Smart Key System
~1998–2015
Locksmith support ✅ Yes
All keys lost ✅ Yes
  • Introduced around 1998 with EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch)
  • Uses infrared + RF communication between key and ignition
  • Became the standard across most Mercedes models (C, E, S-Class, ML, GL, etc.)
  • Keys are encrypted but can still be programmed by advanced locksmiths
  • Supports spare keys, all-keys-lost, and module repair (EIS, ESL, etc.)
Common chassis: W204W212W221W166W207
Customer takeaway: This is the 'sweet spot' — fully serviceable without the dealer. We do all-keys-lost, spare keys, and module repair on FBS3 vehicles in your driveway.

FBS4 / DAS4

Encrypted Online System
~2013–Present
Locksmith support ⚠️ Limited
All keys lost ❌ Dealer only
  • Introduced gradually around 2013–2015 depending on model
  • Fully adopted across newer platforms (W205, W222, W213, W167, current EQS/EQE EVs)
  • Uses server-based authentication + advanced encryption
  • No longer offline programmable
  • Requires Mercedes factory authorization (online access)
  • Keys are pre-coded to VIN from factory
Common chassis: W205W222W213W167W223EQSEQE
Customer takeaway: This is where most people get stuck — Mercedes designed FBS4 to block aftermarket programming. Spare keys are sometimes possible (with working key + VIN); all-keys-lost is dealer-only.

Common problems

Common Mercedes-Benz key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Mercedes-Benz keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why won't my Mercedes key start the car?

Most common causes: dead fob battery, fob desynced from the FBS module (often after a 12V battery jump or replacement), or — on FBS3 cars — a failing EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch). We diagnose on-site before quoting a new key. A new key won't fix an EIS or FBS module fault.

Lost the only Mercedes key — can it really be done without the dealer?

Depends on your generation. FBS3 (most W204/W212/W221/W166 cars from the mid-2010s through ~2017) — yes, we do FBS3 all-keys-lost on-site. We pull the EIS data, generate a new key file, cut the blade to your VIN, and program it. Typical job 30–60 minutes. FBS4 (current model years, ~2017+) — currently dealer-only for all-keys-lost (industry-wide; Mercedes has not released FBS4 immobilizer access to aftermarket equipment). If you have a working key plus VIN, we can still program FBS4 spares on-site. Bring VIN — we confirm your generation before dispatch.

Can my Mercedes 'KEYLESS GO' fob be replaced if I lost it?

Yes. KEYLESS GO is the proximity feature on most modern Mercedes — physically the same fob. Replacement is the same on-site programming process. Bring VIN before dispatch.

Why does my Mercedes fob work intermittently?

Usually a weak fob battery, internal fob switch wear, or moisture damage. We test the fob first — if it's the fob, we replace it; if the issue is on the car side (FBS or antenna), a new key won't fix it.

FAQ

Common Mercedes-Benz questions.

What's FBS3 vs. FBS4 — and does it matter for my Mercedes?

FBS3 and FBS4 are different generations of Mercedes immobilizer. FBS4 (introduced gradually starting around 2017) uses stronger encryption. The system depends on year and model — we confirm by VIN. FBS3 has full coverage including all-keys-lost. FBS4 is currently dealer-only for all-keys-lost (industry-wide); we can still program FBS4 spare keys when a working key plus VIN are provided.

Can you replace an S-Class smart key in our driveway?

Yes — when you have a working key plus VIN. S-Class is one of our most-requested premium calls. Smart key spare programming on-site in 20–30 minutes for most cases. Note: current FBS4-equipped S-Class models are spare-key only on-site; if you've lost ALL keys to an FBS4 S-Class, that's currently a dealer-only job (industry-wide). Bring year and VIN before dispatch.

What about AMG trims (C63, E63, S63, GT)?

AMG trims use the same Mercedes FBS immobilizer as non-AMG models. The AMG-specific work is engine and chassis, not keys. Same programming.

Do you handle EQS and EQE electric Mercedes?

Spare keys only — both use FBS4, which is currently dealer-only for all-keys-lost (industry-wide). If you have a working key plus VIN, we program FBS4 spares on-site for EQS and EQE in 20–30 minutes. EV powertrain doesn't change the key programming. Bring VIN before dispatch so we confirm the exact FBS4 sub-variant for your year.

Do you handle Smart cars (Fortwo, Forfour, Smart EQ)?

Yes — and this is one of our specialties. Mercedes-Benz pulled Smart out of the US market in 2019, so most US Mercedes dealers no longer service Smart cars, and most aftermarket locksmiths don't carry the platform-specific equipment. We do. We program keys for Smart Fortwo (gas and EQ electric), Forfour (where available), and the Smart Roadster. If you've been told 'we can't help' by a dealer or another locksmith, call us — bring VIN before dispatch.
